# v05-halftone

**The idea.** A magazine spread printed in two inks — hot magenta and
electric yellow — on black newsprint. The page has no cards and no tiles: it
has rows, rules and full-bleed breaks.

**The tool list is a spread.** Each tool is a full-width row cut into two
columns: the name at 3.5rem in the left column, and in the right column its
languages, its description, its real install command and the two links. A
hairline rule closes every row; a two-pixel yellow rule opens the set. Every
eighth row the page breaks for a full-bleed halftone band that runs the whole
window width, alternating magenta and yellow.

**Reading a row.** Pointing at one takes a four-pixel yellow rule down its
left edge and slides it six pixels to the right, the way a proof reader marks
the line being read. The ink under the type does not change and neither does
the type.

**Dither.** More of it than anywhere else on the site: the hero plate (a
two-tone canvas ramp between the inks behind a three-pixel yellow border and a
black offset shadow) and two full-bleed halftone breaks inside the list. Each
break carries a coarse checker layer drifting at 0.2 of the scroll rate.

**Parallax.** The hero plate at 0.16, the checker inside each break at 0.2,
the dot grid at 0.26: three rates, and the plate separates from the claim
within the first scroll.

**Palette.** Magenta `#ff2d95` and yellow `#ffe600` on `#0a0008`. Filled
controls use `--v5-ink` (`#d1177a`), the darkest magenta that still reads as
magenta and carries white text at 5.1:1; nothing on the page paints white on
the raw accent.

**Type.** Grotesk, tight (-0.035em), for the motto and the tool names, which
are set in capitals; Plex for descriptions; mono for languages, install
commands, links and buttons.

**Notches.** Bottom-right on the buttons and the sign-up boxes. The rows are
rules only.

**Arrows.** Two, the loudest on the site: 6px yellow stroke, 22/14 dash, 26px
head. Hero buttons into the list, last row into the sign-up.

**Density.** Medium: the rows are big and there are a lot of them, but each
one is a single horizontal band and the breaks give the eye a rest twice on
the way down.

**Mobile (390px).** The two columns of a row stack, the name drops to
1.75rem, the install command is dropped (it is the one thing that cannot wrap
at 390px), the hero art shrinks to 60% of the width, and the links become
44px targets. The halftone breaks stay: they are the page's rhythm.
